RIP Eartha Kitt: One of the most sultry women who ever lived

Christmas is a little less merrier this year with the loss of Eartha Kitt, diva and legend.  She was the ultimate Catwoman.  I loved her in Boomerang playing Lady Eloise.  “Marcussss, Darlingggg!”  Too Funny.  Rest in Peace

Yahoo – Dec 25, 2008 – A family friend says Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died. She was 81.

Andrew Freedman says Kitt died Thursday of colon cancer and was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

Kitt, a self-proclaimed “sex kitten” famous for her catlike purr, was one of America’s most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and getting a third nomination. She also was nominated for two Tony Awards and a Grammy.

Real Housewives of Atlanta: The reunion was GHETTO as hell

I’m sorry…I really, really didn’t want to speak on the Real Housewives of Atlanta at all. Sure, like a lot of folks out there I watched the show as a guilty little pleasure. You have to admit, it is entertaining television.

I watched the reunion show last night and I must say…they were in rare form. Rare! Oh my goodness. I really thought someone’s weave or wig was going to fly across the screen. Here are my thoughts:

  • Ne Ne saying that the rumors of her bring an ex-stripper are false because she currently strips, but only strips for her husband was one of the best lines of the night.
  • Lisa should have let Ne Ne loose. I would have been ok with her getting one good slap in on Kim. lol
  • Kim, why would you elude to the fact that you are wearing a wig because you have cancer and then take it back in the next few sentences. You sound crazy? I was sitting there thinking…ok…do you have some other terrible disease? Sexually transmitted maybe (I only say that because that was my reaction to the fact she said she didn’t want to talk about it. If you’ll mention cancer but not another disease…what do you have to hide?) Oh, and let me not forget to mention that Dallas Austin has publicly said that he and Kim are not working together and that he was just working with her for TV on his Myspace blog.
  • I love Dwight!!! He is fierce! Note to Bravo: He needs his own show!
  • What was up with the hole in Sheree’s sweater? Did a fight breakout before the taping?
  • Was it just me or was DeShawn a little less perky now she’s gone through the after-show drama and commenting/gossip (online and otherwise) that has surely taken her through the ringer for her extravagance, her servants, and the failed fundraiser?
  • Lisa??? You were the good one, right? What in the world did Kim do to push her buttons. She looked like she was about to take her earrings off and whop Kim’s a**.

Like Flavor Flav’s reality show dating journey, I knew this show was going to be a general train wreck Continue reading

Stacy Dash may have a covenant with the devil

How the hell does she look this good at 42 years old?? How? I know black doesn’t crack…but it does age.  I swear she much have a deal, a covenant agreement with Satan himself. You know I wouldn’t usually post a backshot, black men’s magazine picture like this, but dag. Can someone just bottle her DNA and sell it? I’d buy.

“The Grammys” was like a Black Family Reunion

Aretha Franklin, Bebe Winans, the Clark Sistas, and Isreal and New Breed…they went in with the shouting music. Old school New Orleans Jazz Gospel…those old men were playing those trombones!
Kanye’s tribute to his mom (he still can’t sing). That was lovely!

That singing black boy (sorry, i don’t know this actor’s name. Someone let me know who he is.) who died in “Across the Universe” singing “Let it be”…I really felt that! That old black woman was sangin’!

Beyonce singing with Tina Turner (some one is picking up weight).

Alicia singing with Frank…and you know Frank loved him some Coloreds.

Little Richard…your flamboyant uncle who couldn’t come out because of…well we know why. Rhinestones, darling…”whooooooooooooooo hooo!”

And of Course….Amy Winehouse as the crazy light-skinned cousin/white girl that married into the family. Wait, no the Michael Jackson tribute (I don’t remember seeing it…did it happen???) covers the crazy light-skinned cousin role. Sorry, my bad. LOL

Loved it. You just know Jimmy Jam as Chairman of the Academy had a lot to do with all of those African American faces, ya dig! Better than past years. I think this was a good 50th celebration. Can’t wait to see all of the blog reviews and youtube clips to come.

Oh, since Herbie Hancock beat Amy Winehouse…this was an authentic Grammy celebration!

I Love Black Hair Shows…and so does my coffee table

hair wars bookI love black hair shows for the drama, the styles, and of course the half naked muscle bound men that delight a crowd of women and gay men.  There is nothing like it.

Photographer David Yellen (Time, Life and People) and writer Johanna Lenander (I.D., Surface and The New York Times’ T) explore the jaw-dropping outrageousness and artistic coiffures from African-American hair trade shows in a new book called Hair WarsYou can get it on Amazon.com

We have one of the greatest shows here in DC, The Golden Scissor Awards.  I just love it.  I’ve also been watching a reality show on BET J called Tears, Shears, and Beauty about contestants in this year’s Bonner Brothers show in the ATL.  People use everything from glitter, bibles, fishbowls, and of course tons and tons of fake hair.  It’s an art form that is uniquely African-American.  Here are some examples…
