Is Guido as offensive as the N-word?

Italian Americans, I need your guidance on this.  Is the G-word as offensive as the N-word?  I’m just wondering…I have no insight on this particular term, being from the midwest originally.  I’ve heard all the buzz coming from MTV’s Jersey Shore reality show, and it made me wonder about this.

Is it truly a racial slur?  Was it imposed upon Italian immigrants by Americans who were mad about immigration?  I’m wondering if young Italians are using the term as one of endearment as many African-American youth do (Hey, my n—a!).

Wikipedia: Guido is a slang, derogatory term for a working class urban Italian American. The Guido stereotype is multi-faceted. Primarily, it is used as a demeaning term towards Italian Americans, as the word Guido is derived from either the Italian proper name Guido or a conjugation of the Italian verb Guidare.[1] More recently, it has come to also encompass Italians who conduct themselves as thugs with an overtly macho attitude.

Former SC official basically calls Michelle Obama’s ancestors to gorillas

He apologized but I don’t give a F***.  Sorry.  This is unacceptable.  Totally.

Today former state election director Rusty DePass issued an apology Wednesday for his comments last week linking an escaped gorilla with the ancestors of First Lady Michelle Obama.

The formal apology came during a noon press conference at the offices of the State NAACP.

“I am truly sorry for any offense I have caused,” DePass said, speaking to a small group gathered for the press conference.

DePass, commenting on the facebook.com social networking Web site Friday, created a stir when he said an escaped gorilla at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia was probably one of Obama’s ancestors.

DePass responded to a facebook.com link to news the gorilla had briefly escaped his cage by writing: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

DePass later admitted he was referring to the First Lady.  source

Um…NAACP, why did you host this fake apology? Why?

WTF: Michelle as Angela Davis and Barack as Bin Laden

obama new yorker cover

Oh my, Oh my. Last week it was the “Rev” Jesse Jackson talking about cutting off Obama’s nuts. Now, the New Yorker’s July 21 cover art features Michelle looking like a Black Panther, with a huge gun and Angela Davis style Afro. Barack is outfited with an Al Qaeda-style outfit, match the portrait of Bin Laden on the wall next to them in what appears to be the oval office. They bump fists as the American flag burns in a fireplace.

“The intent of the cover is to satirize the vicious and racist attacks and rumors and misconceptions about the Obamas that have been floating around in the blogosphere and are reflected in public opinion polls,” Remnick says. “What we set out to do was to throw all these images together, which are all over the top and to shine a kind of harsh light on them, to satirize them. That’s part of what we do.”New Yorker editor in chief David Remnick for World News

And all I can say is WTF was the New Yorker thinking. I know the magazine business is not as good as it used to be. Maybe they needed sales and just said…f*** it. There is no such thing as bad publicity, right? Who gave this cover the green light? Did they not think the web would explode with condemnation? Did they not see the Vogue Magazine Lebron James cover?

Don’t they know that racism and stereotyping is something to be done in private, behind closed doors in America these days? This is the kind of blatant bigotry and propaganda that I haven’t seen in a while.

Sure, sure…I could see some satire somewhere in this mess…but I don’t want to. As much as I am the daughter of Black Revolutionaries and I appreciate turning stereotypes on their head…I’m not feeling this. I’m just not. The satire is NOT obvious here. Are they going to follow this up with a McCain cover with John as a ventriloquist’s dummy sitting of Pres. Bush’s lap??? Now that would be satire. I would get that joke. I agree with the Obama camp, it’s “tasteless and offensive“.

This is a case of bad journalism, bad business, and the exploitation of stereotypes and fear for the sake of selling magazines. This is not about “the story”. This is about being controversial=$$$

Other Coverage

The cover has already inspired the following online poll in a forum at the conservative online tabloid the WorldNetDaily: 59 percent of the small, unscientific sample of those taking the poll agree with the statement: “The image isn’t too far from the dangerous truth about the Obama family.”

“About one out of 10 Americans continue to believe that Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, is a Muslim, after all.” – ABC News (New Yorker Editor David Remnick Talks to ABC News About Cover )

Update: From the agency that created the racist homophobic Hanes ads

Here is an email we received from Philippe Krakowsky of IPG regarding our post on the racist, homophobic, horrible ads that a subsidiary branch of McCann-Erickson in India produced.

Hi Ashe –

I work at IPG, the parent company of McCann-Erickson, and was hoping to have the opportunity to share our thoughts – and concerns – with you and your readers on what happened that led to the offensive fake ads that you ran a post on a few days back.

I thought we’d posted a comment with a link to a fuller apology and explanation, but please let me take a few moments of your time to share this information with you directly.

Fake local print ads were produced by McCann Erickson India – without the knowledge, approval or consent of Hanesbrands Inc., of anyone at IPG, or of McCann’s global management. The ads are wholly inconsistent with the interest of the Hanes brand and were created only for entry into creative competitions. They would never have been approved had our internal procedures been followed and should never have been publicly distributed. We have identified the circumstances that led to this violation of our policies and of our trust, and we are taking immediate corrective action.

We have apologized to Hanesbrands for developing this objectionable work. We want to extend our apologies to those who these fake ads have offended, as well as to Hanesbrands’ customers and business partners. That is why I would appreciate it very much if you’d be willing to share this information – and the link to our full statement – with your readers.

Thank you,
Philippe Krakowsky

Ummm…fake ads? If they were created by someone at the company for a competition…that’s not fake. Some “rogue employees” created them on purpose for submission to a competition of some sort. These ads ran…that’s not fake.

From the statement…”The ads in question were developed and run locally, without the knowledge of anyone at IPG, or of McCann’s global [or country] management. The ads appeared once in a small publication in Mumbai in late 2007 so as to qualify for consideration in award competitions and were recently posted by local Indian employees at McCann onto two web sites that display international advertising campaigns.”

You Might Be Offended: Definition of the N-Word

KFC Riot The Caption on this photo is “BITCH WUT CHU MEAN NO MO CHIKINZ?!?!”

THIS SITE IS NOT WORK SAFE!!!

Encyclopedia Dramatica is a wiki-based collaborative site (modeled…I mean straight copied from Wikipedia) with satire filled “humour” cataloging websites, culture, and internet drama, especially relating to livejournal, 4chan, and wikipedia, making fun of virtually all popular subcultures. It takes a very, very crude and ill-restrained OFFENSIVE approach. It shouldn’t be taken too seriously, but as I always say, “Not everyone is smart enough to pick up satire.” When I read the definition of “Nigga”…I thought I’d stubbled upon a KKK online dictionary. They note the “nigger infection” rate for various cities in the definition. DC has a 61% infection rate. I would have to agree…gentrification and the influx of white folks has made chocolate city less chocolate. *sigh* Here’s a snippet.

“Nigga or alternatively, Nigger is a term of endearment for the half-ape,shanaynay infested, half-human creatures devolved from chimpanzees who eat fried chicken, watermelons and collard greens, write songs about raping white women and stealing welfare checks from invalid grandmothers so they can pretend they bought those plastic spinning hubcaps they stole from other niggers to pimp out their stolen 1974 Cadillacs.. Niggers are lazy, dumb, and most of all, they smell even after taking a shower. They pretend to act civilized, but quickly give up the ghost when offended and resort to their monkey instincts by getting drunk on Colt 45, Olde English, or any other cheap ass Malt Liquor, smoke menthol cigarettes, weed and crack cocaine, followed by raping white women and throwing their own feces as their tree-dwelling monkey predecessors. Nigger women, when challenged, will take off their earrings, shoes and bling as their brains are not big enough to know this has no fucking effect whatsoever. Niggers speak an abomination of a language they call ebonics – which is nothing more than gibberish filtered through thick, rubbery lips. Because of the prevelance of violence in black society, 9 out of 10 blacks will be gunned down before the age of three.”

WARNING: Please, please please do not click on the link at the top of the page that says, “Offended? Possibly, you are offended by the content of this page. If so, please click here, and scroll to the bottom.” If you click you will see some of the most offensive, nasty, gross, sickening images of dead bodies, genitalia…I don’t even want to think of it. Basically they are saying “If you think you were offended…you ain’t seen nothing yet!!!”
