“When Giuliani sneered about community organizers on the “South side” of Chicago, it’s pretty clear what he was saying: Barack Obama spent his time rabble-rousing among black people.” – Ezra Klien
Both Giuliani and Palin made the profession of community organizer out to be the butt of a joke. Palin said “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer – except that you have actual responsibilities”.
Without community organizers, African American Women like me (and countless other religious, LGBTQ, racial, etc…various social segments I could name) would have a hard row to tow trying to “pull ourselves up by our boot straps”. Um…Palin would not be able to vote without the work of community organizers. Hello?
Abolitionists organized to bring an end to slavery
Women’s Sufferage organizers worked to give women the vote
Countless Civil Rights leaders were Community organizers like Martin Luther King, Dr. Dorothy Height, and Malcolm X
Community organizers would not be a group I would come after, if I was on the Republican ticket, or any ticket for that matter. These people know how to mobilize people, real people, on a grassroots level. They know how to raise money. They know how to make change happen, even when hope is gone. They are real workers. That’s not a population that I would want mad at me if I was in the underdog position in the presidential race.

…, but it’s when you get in the ring and face your opponent alone (without the benefit of speech writers like former George W. Bush scribe Matthew Scully) that the public will really be able to see how you fight you battles, and if you have the stuff in you to win, to be a true champion. You will not have the benefit of these well crafted words when you debate. You’ve set the bar very high with that speech. Your Republican supporters will expect much of the same, just like a reigning champ. There’s nothing like seeing the champ go down, huh?
I think you would have done better explaining yourself and who you will be as a VP than trying to just cut down Obama and Biden. I thought that was Rudy’s job, he’s gotten quite good at it over the last year when it comes to Obama.
I know I’m not the only one watching the Republican National Convention and saying, “Are there only white people in the audience tonight? I thought the Republicans have said they have a diverse party make up?”. I saw about 9 black people, 2 Asian people, one dark skinned Indian woman behind Cindy McCain, and about 10 people who I can’t say what they are. Other than that the RNC is just a sea of White people, mostly in suits. So this is what the ruling class looks like?!?! Must be nice.
Sure, call me a racist for pointing it out, but the DNC was much more diverse. It actually looked like MY America. An America filled with all kinds of people.
I’m just saying, I’m a black woman and I notice these things. Thompson threw them some red meat, at least.
